Mary Toole

President and chief writer

After a decade on the road, wholesaling financial products and services, and several years off the road, working as Director of Education Communications at Strong Retirement Plan Services, I decided to take a page from my parents’ book and start my own company.

As my husband likes to say, I went to work for my favorite boss.

I launched Toole Bertz & Associates in 1999 and, ever since, my company has been developing and delivering financial content that makes it easier for financial services companies, plan sponsors, wholesalers, and advisors to communicate complex ideas clearly.

Communicating clearly isn’t easy, especially when content has to pass muster with compliance.

I write clear, compelling, compliance-friendly content because I’m familiar with the audiences in the financial services industry, understand the products and services available, and appreciate the importance of communicating concepts and benefits.

In the late 1990s, I took a page from my parents’ book and started my own business, providing financial writing and consulting services. Not long after, my five-year-old daughter pointed to a Strong Funds billboard and remarked, “Hey! It’s the place you worked when you were selling pencils!” Her younger brother grinned and bobbed his head in agreement.

Despite my children’s enthusiasm, I have never sold pencils.

As Director of Education Communications for Strong Retirement Plan Services, I helped develop and deliver an award-winning retirement education program (with branded pencils to complete workbooks).

At Strong, I learned how adults learn. It was information I could have  used during the dozen or so years I spent on the road, wholesaling and managing wholesalers for Nuveen, John Govett & Company, and MFS.

Today, as a content expert, copy writer, and compliance tamer, I am uniquely positioned to help financial services firms develop effective communications.
